This will be the third time I’ve played the Vandals - and the last time we’ll play them this season. They’ve beaten us both times previously, and were crowned 2011 Champions. This has to be a case of third time lucky, right?
Our bench coach has fled to Papua New Guinea for two weeks (seriously) and we are five skaters short of a full roster. But we’re feeling optimistic!
Last Saturday night saw a rematch between Sun State and Canberra’s Vice City Rollers, the second- and third-ranked teams in the country respectively. As Sun State’s first interleague game for the season, it was a night whose hype and anticipation was well-deserved.
Canberra kept Sun State scoreless for the first two jams, with nimble jammers Shortstop and Bambi Von Smasher racking up an early 12-point lead for the ‘Berrans. However, Sun State’s impenetrable defence and a spate of power jams in their favour saw them establish a commanding 90-point lead at the half.
After much anticipation, the Sun State Roller Girls held our first public bout of the season with the skaters trying (and succeeding) a new style of play. A far cry from the days when a jammer was able to come into a pack at speed and step her way through barely being touched, they find they are now halted by the unforgiving defence of scrum starts and a plethora of intimidating backwards blocking.
Along with some first time bouting skaters (Die Wrecktor of Mayhem and Dodge&Bolt), we also welcomed the new Sun State mascot - a BEE!! Cheekily trying to join in on the team warm ups, players quickly
