FAQ

How many officials are needed for a game of roller derby?

A fully-staffed crew consists of seven referees, and eleven NSOs.

Why so many?

Roller derby is a full-contact sport, with ten skaters on track at once, and no single point of focus (for example, a ball). Many referees are needed to ensure safe, fair, and legal play.
Also, roller derby is unique in that penalties are served by skaters without stopping play, requiring coordination between multiple NSOs.

I'm thinking about training to be a referee. Do I need to know how to skate?

You don't need to be a great skater to come along. We will teach you the basics, and build from there.
Taking some learn-to-skate classes beforehand will make the transition to roller derby less daunting (check your local rink), but they're not essential.

Referees go through the same training program as skaters - click through to the Skater FAQ for more info.
